Designer FAQs: End and Side Tables

Is there a difference between an end table and a side table?

“Side table” is a larger category that encompasses both end tables and smaller accent tables.

  • End tables are placed on either side of a sofa or sectional; some have drawers and shelves for storing odds and ends. They provide a handy surface, and they’re also great for table lamps so you can have a little task lighting.
  • Accent tables are smaller, with just enough surface area for a beverage, book, or remote, and they’re typically placed chairside. They can also double as plant stands in a pinch, and some have storage shelves.

Do my side tables have to match my TV stand or coffee table?

It’s all a matter of what you like. Some people prefer a cohesive look when it comes to their wood furniture; for example, our Connall collection has matching coffee, console, and end tables in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Others prefer a more eclectic and curated look. If you prefer to mix and match, here are a few tips:

  • Start by selecting the atmosphere you want to create. A cottage or farmhouse may incorporate mix-and-match living room tables with a bench-made look, while a more modern space may include a mix of tables that incorporate industrial-looking metals.
  • Use repetition to unify the atmosphere you’re trying to create. If you want to create a refined look, select living room tables with warm metal finishes, and then look for lighting, candlesticks, and other décor that also has warm metals.
  • Sprinkle in some contrast. Pair a square coffee table with round end tables that have similar design elements.

If you’re not sure whether your side tables will match other living room tables, use Web AR or our EA inHome® app to preview an Ethan Allen table in your current space. You can also—

  • Visit our shoppable living rooms to shop table groupings that designers have already put together.
  • Use repetition to unify the atmosphere you’re trying to create. If you want to create a refined look, select living room tables with warm metal finishes, and then look for lighting, candlesticks, and other décor that also has warm metals.
  • Ping Live Chat and ask an Ethan Allen interior designer to suggest side tables for you—their help is complimentary.

How big should a side table be?

Think first of how you want your side table to function. If you need a place for a lamp and storage for small items, pick an end table that’s wide enough to accommodate your lamp, and make sure it comes with a storage drawer.

If you float your sofa or sectional in the middle of a room, make sure your end table isn’t so wide that it interferes with traffic flow. Leave about 18 inches of clearance around your end table for people to easily maneuver around.

If you’re worried about finding the right fit, use our 3D room planner. to preview the table in your space, or ask an Ethan Allen designer to stop by and take some professional measurements.

What goes on top of my side table or accent table to decorate it?

Again, think of functionality most of all, and then think of what appeals to you. If you don’t need a lamp on your end table, place a small floral on a tray or a stack of books to decorate your tabletop.

Since a small accent table has so little surface area, worry less about the top and more about the statement made by the table itself. Choose something with a really eye-catching base, or something with a striking mix of materials, to make a visual impact.

Can I use a side table as a night stand?

Depending on the person, quality is usually determined in one of two (or both!) ways: Does it look well made, and will it last?

  • Artistry. Quality can be defined by features like starburst-veneered tops, dramatic turned pedestals, or other beautiful design elements. Look for finishes and veneers that are applied by hand—even the simplest table, when handcrafted to a high standard, will be of exceptional quality.
  • Structural durability. If your side table is made from wood, look for wood that’s kiln-dried to avoid splitting or cracking. If it a glass top or shelf make sure the glass is tempered to help prevent breakage. If it has a storage drawer, look for dovetail drawer joinery that will hold the drawer together for years to come.
  • Finish quality. If you live in an active home, select a finish that can develop character over time. Many of our wood finishes are design to scratch slightly and wear without losing their beauty—this is part of the experience of owning something handcrafted and one of a kind.

Ethan Allen has been trusted for almost a century because of our high standards for quality and beauty. When you buy an end or side table here, you can feel confident that you’re getting something that’s beautiful and built to endure.
