Our custom furniture starts with sustainably sourced wood, much of which comes from Appalachian forests.

Some logs are taken to our Beecher Falls, Vermont, sawmill, where they’re milled and made ready for crafting.

Other lumber comes to our lumber inspection team in Pine Valley, North Carolina.

Every piece of our wood furniture is as unique as the tree it came from. The grain will vary based on the part of the tree and how it’s sawn, may show natural patterns like tiger striping, and develops its own character as it ages. Extension tables include either equalizer slides (for pedestal and trestle tables) or metal slides with a built-in crown that supports the table center when extended. 

Tip-restraint hardware is included with all appropriate

furniture to help keep you and your family safe.

We construct our furniture from sustainably 

sourced wood and solid wood veneers.

We use traditional construction techniques, including floating construction that gives wood the freedom to expand and contract, and traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery for durability.

Our custom-made furniture is built by hand using wood that we dry in our own kilns and often mill ourselves. This commitment to handcraftsmanship means that we can offer a world of special options for each piece. It also means that each piece is made one of a kind, one at a time, so no two pieces are alike—we consider that a point of pride and evidence of the character that goes into everything we craft.

For modular office, custom buffets, and custom media furniture, you can select glass or wood doors, or in some cases, open shelving. For our custom buffets you can choose raised panel, beaded edge, or beadboard doors.

Our custom bedroom, custom buffets, custom desks, and custom office furniture can be personalized using the hardware finish of your choice.

Custom leg styles are available on all our custom dining tables, custom buffets, and custom home office desks. A piece’s leg style can determine how it works in your space—a cabriole leg feels more formal, while a Parsons leg can feel more modern.

Add a hutch to the top of our custom buffet cabinets, and choose either glass doors or open, beadboard-backed shelving. Then, your buffet becomes a display for your china and other keepsakes.

A rough-sawn or textured tabletop has a rustic, benchmade look, created with wood

planks that have a touchable texture and variations in grain.

For a more formal, uniform look, choose a smooth top—but know that even smooth

tabletops may not be perfectly uniform in color because every wood piece takes 

finish differently.

We offer more than a dozen wood finishes, applied by hand using layers of paint, stain, glaze, leaf, and more. Some are also distressed, meaning we purposely apply divots, dings, and scuffs for a time-loved look.

Because every tree is exposed to different temperature, water, and light conditions, and pulls in different minerals from the local soil, each piece of wood has a different base color. To protect the environment, we use as much of a tree as possible rather than going for perfect matches, which means the same finish may look slightly different on another furniture piece.

Many pieces can be configured to fit your space, from our modular media pieces to our

custom buffets. Different configurations allow you to personalize the piece exactly to the

size of your space and to how you want to use it; add shelving towers on either side of your

office desk, or add another door to your dining buffet—your Ethan Allen designer can walk you through the options.
