Alexandre Descubes began his career as a government cartographer in Mauritius, charged with the onerous task of exploring the unknown. He produced at least eight maps, including one of Mauritius still used by surveyors today. His botanical drawings, first drawn in pencil and then painted in watercolor, depict botany that grew on the Indian subcontinent. Each rendering is painstakingly annotated with the plant's family, genus and species classifications, its names in several languages as well as a botanical description and a list of habitats.
